“El nuevo place to be de Cartagena”
Bernardo Álvarez from Casa del Torno shares some details that weave the story of this colonial architectural gem located in Colombia.
The throbbing heart of Cartagena, where the past weaves with the present in an architectural dance, stands a new whim that whispers through time: Casa del Torno. This colonial jewel, located in the San Diego neighborhood, is a sanctuary of privacy and luxury that awakens the senses and triggers emotions that only masterpieces can achieve.
The grandeur of this new Colombian “place to be” is revealed as one crosses its threshold. This imposing construction, dating back to the mid-17th century, harmonizes perfectly with its surroundings. The house, which lends its name to Torno Street where it stands, emerges alongside the Santa Clara convent, a silent witness to the vicissitudes Cartagena has faced over the years, from the feared English pirate Sir Francis Drake’s invasion to the gleam of modernity.
With an expanse of 500 square meters, Casa del Torno becomes the dream refuge for travelers seeking an atmosphere of privacy and exclusivity. Inside, time seems to stand still, offering guests the opportunity to immerse themselves in the charm of bygone eras. Four exquisitely decorated rooms, each with its own private bathroom, provide a personalized sanctuary of comfort and splendor.
The indoor pool, an oasis of serenity in the heart of the house, invites travelers to immerse themselves in its warm waters, while the outside world is suspended. An outdoor bar, an inner courtyard steeped in history, and a second-floor terrace with a panoramic viewpoint are spaces that offer views of the cobbled roofs and walls laden with secrets.
However, the true magic of Casa del Torno has been revealed thanks to Bernardo Álvarez, the representative of this architectural marvel. “Casa del Torno has been restored twice by architect Gloria Patricia Martínez, a recognized expert in Cartagena’s colonial houses,” narrated Bernardo. Indeed, the professional has dedicated her passion and expertise to revitalizing the house on two occasions: first in 1989 and most recently in 2022. Details that are unveiled as one steps into its spaces.
Visitors discover small treasures that bear witness to the rich heritage of Casa del Torno. In its resonating walls, the history of the Order of the Clarisse Sisters comes to life. This space used to shelter the sisters who had taken vows of seclusion, using a revolving turntable to maintain contact with the outside world. Thus, “in addition to shielding themselves from curious gazes, they received their food and medicines, and sold various bakery and pastry preparations,” commented Álvarez. This iconic turntable, meticulously reproduced and placed in its original location, is one of the destination’s treasures.
And when it comes to decoration, it becomes a tribute to Colombian culture and the Greek and Italian influences of the owners. Every detail, from the imposing crystal lamp brought from Prague to the elaborate mirrors and hummingbird-adorned chandeliers, reflects an artistic dedication that elevates the experience of each guest. Connections to the culture also manifest in the library and latticed closets, works of master cabinetmaker Gustavo Vásquez, and in the painting by Colombian artist Jorge Elías Triana, whose legacy finds its home in the main hall.
Furthermore, this spot has also served as a resting place for several illustrious personalities such as Gabriel García Márquez, Mercedes Carranza, and various former presidents of Colombia, all of whom have succumbed to the allure of this colonial gem.
“Casa del Torno is the ideal choice for guests who wish to arrive in Cartagena and literally seclude themselves in this ancient Clarisse house to live unforgettable experiences, like an exclusive tasting of delicious Colombian coffee or savoring the best of local rum,” emphasized Álvarez. “And when you want to venture out, why not take a historical tour of the old city on a bicycle or go for a boat ride around the Rosario Islands,” the expert concluded.
Undoubtedly, we can affirm that at Casa del Torno, dreams of luxury and privacy intertwine with echoes of the past. This architectural gem not only promises an unforgettable stay but also a journey through time and an intimate connection with Colombian history and essence.
